Last night my original plan was to keep working through the pantry stock with a boxed gluten-free pizza crust mix, but eagerly scrapped those plans when Hubs said he was in the mood for a night out. We decided to use a discount voucher we’ve had for a couple months for a prix fixe dinner for two at Tony’s Oyster Bar in Cary, NC.
I was a little nervous about it since I wasn’t sure how many choices I’d have on a limited prix fixe menu, but when I made our reservation and talked to them about it I was assured it would be okay. When we first sat down, I told the server about my gluten-free needs and she called over the chef to talk to me. He was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions, and I immediately felt more at ease.
I couldn’t have any of the appetizers listed, but he offered to do a shrimp cocktail for the first course. I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture, but it very simple and tasty, and the shrimp were perfectly cooked.
There were quite a few entrees listed that looked like they’d be okay for me, and after some discussion regarding ingredients I settled on the citrus-glazed salmon served over wilted spinach with mashed potatoes and vegetables on the side.
The citrus glaze was bright and tangy, and the fish was perfectly cooked. I usually opt for rice with fish, but since their only rice option was a pilaf I had to go with the mashed potatoes. I was definitely surprised at how much I enjoyed the two together, and will be doing that pairing again at home!
We ended up declining the dessert course entirely. I wasn’t expecting to be able to have one anyway and Hubs said he was too stuffed, although I suspect he was just being nice so I wouldn’t have to be jealous
All in all, I was really happy with our experience at Tony’s, and we will definitely be going back – Hubs and I both are eager to check out their Sunday Oyster Bar specials!
