Spoonful Sunday: Embrace Group Fitness

I’ve always been intimidated by fitness classes.  I’m not athletically inclined, never played team sports, and my main goal in gym class was to get away with doing as little as possible.  Even when I started exercising more regularly, I stuck to brisk walks and fitness DVDs, never venturing too far out of my comfort zone. 

Since I joined O2 Fitness, I’ve been trying to challenge myself more.  I did the personal training session to get started, and have been incorporating more strength training into my workouts.  I’ve even ventured a little bit into group fitness by taking the yoga classes offered at the gym a few times a week.

I was definitely nervous when I first started, but in just a few weeks I’ve seen improvements in my practice, particularly in my flexibility and upper-body strength.  I can get into poses more easily, and don’t have to strain as much to hold them.  I might even go as far as to say I’m nearing intermediate status after years of being just a beginner!

Going to yoga class was a big step for me, but not all that intimidating considering I was already very familiar with basic yoga and knew what to expect.  I’ve tried to talk myself into trying other classes, but so far I keep chickening out and doing the solo thing instead.  This week I want to change that and challenge myself.

I was reading a recent post by Julie at Peanut Butter Fingers and she was raving about getting to go to BodyPump again.  I used to hear a lot about BodyPump from Tina over at Carrots n’ Cake too (at least before she drank the CrossFit Kool-Aid).  As both those ladies are jaw-droppingly fit, I think I need to get started!

I’m going to try some others too, but BodyPump intimidates me the most so I’m going to face my fears there first.  Wish me luck!!
