Whew, what a day! This is the first time I’ve sat down aside from a quick lunch. Pedometer reading nearly 12K steps and it’s just after six! But it was well worth it – I got to the gym, ran errands, and got quite a few things in my house sparkling clean, including the inside of my refrigerator. That’s always a pretty large undertaking, but it feels good get it all scrubbed out and reorganized. Also a great opportunity to check expiration dates to make sure I’m not poisoning us by mistake!
So as I was cleaning, I was majorly craving salt so I got out a bag of potato chips and munched as I worked. As I was going back for my fourth or so handful, I realized I had no idea if I had consumed one serving or three. And that really bothered me.
I like to think that I eat pretty well, with a few indulgences. Having to eat gluten free is a big part of that – I almost never eat in restaurants, fast food is an absolute last resort, and a lot of the foods I used to have trouble resisting are no longer an option.
However, there are two sides to that coin. When there are foods that are acceptable for me to eat, like those potato chips, I rationalize that I can treat myself because I’m not allowed all that other stuff, and it’s easy to overindulge like I did today. So I went to Pinterest for a little nutritional inspiration and found this.
I really like the message of mindful eating – I have zero interest in adopting any sort of diet beyond what I already deal with. But I do need to pay a lot more attention to what I’m eating, enjoy indulgences sparingly, and avoid mindless munching. I think that focusing on these areas will help, particularly the bottom two.
To help me stay motivated, I’m going to start a food diary again. I’ve kept them in the past to help me keep track of calories, and I think that it really helps. Unfortunately, it’s a lot harder to do this when you cook mostly on instinct and don’t measure much, so I’m going to simplify it this time and just focus on balancing my plate and being mindful.
I do still want to track as closely as I can, though, so I’m going to use the Evernote Food app to take pictures and notes of my food, and I plan to share on the blog. Stay tuned this week for a peek into how this gluten-free girl eats! Maybe you’ll realize that it’s not nearly as miserable or complicated as it sounds
