If At First You Don’t Succeed…

I thought my 5K runner program was intense last week, but that now seems like a cakewalk compared to what I’ve been trying to achieve this week!  They took me from this…

To this in the very next workout…

Um…what happened to the yellow parts?

Let me tell you, that extra 5 minutes is a lot worse when it is not preceded by a 3-minute walk!  I tried to do it Monday afternoon, and only made it through about 15 minutes before a side stitch totally did me in.  I’ve gotten them before, but I’ve usually been able to work them out by focusing on regulating my breathing.  It got to the point where I was having trouble breathing and I gave up.

Later I learned that my bright idea to bolt down a quick lunch before heading out to the gym was the likely culprit.  I was starving and wanted fuel before hitting the treadmill. Dehydration can also be a factor (source: Wikipedia).

So I regrouped.  On Tuesday I wanted to give my body a break so I did some light cardio and went to a yoga class to get a good stretch.  Wednesday I woke up raring to go, so I decided it was time for attempt #2 – and I was able to do it!

I’m so proud of myself for getting through that – I was running at a pace of 5 mph, which translates to a 12-minute mile, meaning I ran almost 2 miles!  I have never been a runner in my life, so that is a statement I honestly never thought I would even think about, let alone accomplish. Just one measly month ago I was blogging about running 1.5 mins at a stretch and finding it challenging!   I am living proof this program works Smile
