Gluten-Free Friday: Swanson Vitamins

Until recently, I had never heard of Swanson Vitamins.  They reached out to me after seeing my blog and introduced me to their site and products*, and I am so glad they did!

My initial impression based on the name was that they just offered vitamins, but they have so more than that!  They have products for all aspects of health and wellness, even for your pets.  The prices are great too – definitely lower than what I’ve seen in Whole Foods and elsewhere online.

Their site is really easy to search and navigate.  They not only offer the standard filters like category and brands, there’s also a list of filters for specialty diets, including gluten free.  This filter is especially useful if you’re shopping the supplements or beauty products sections, I find those ingredients lists a lot harder to navigate than food labels!  Each GF item is also clearly marked with an icon:

I ended up choosing my order after stumbling across their recipe for Banana Coconut Muffins – I love coconut!  Bonus that the ingredients were links so the products were easy to find.  All I needed was the coconut flour, extra-virgin coconut oil, and fructose

I had actually never heard of 100% fructose before, but according to the site it’s a low-glycemic index sweetener.  It looks and tastes exactly like sugar to me, so if it’s better for me, great!  The coconut flour was also a new product for me, but I had heard of it in the gluten-free baking circles – it is really high in fiber and protein, and smells absolutely amazing.

Checkout was easy, and shipping was fast (plus at a flat rate of $5, affordable - details here).  Bonus, they included a $5 coupon for my next order, so basically free shipping on the next one!

I really appreciated that they specially packaged the coconut oil in plastic to make sure it didn’t leak.

I immediately made the muffins, of course, and they came out great!  At first I was a little skeptical when I saw the recipe called for 6 eggs, but they weren’t eggy at all – plus between the coconut flour and the eggs, they’ve got a good amount of protein.

I used my mini muffin pan, because I find it easier to portion control as I have a bit of a problem when it comes to muffins, particularly since going gluten free.  Good decision on these, since they are so tasty!

I also used the coconut oil to caramelize some sweet potato wedges before baking them off in the oven, and was very impressed with it versus other coconut oils I’ve tried.  High smoke point, and it has a liquid consistency instead of solid so I found it easier to work with.  Great stuff!

*Products were provided to me free of charge, but my opinions are my own and completely honest.

  1. Swanson's is a great vitamin site. I had found out due to needing to being glutened for so long and not knowing it, that I was extremely deficient in Magnesium. Swanson's Has a great deal on this supplement. I too recommend these guys. They also allow you to use Paypal to process your payment. And I usually have my items within 5 business days.

    1. Thanks for the tip on magnesium! I'll have to look into that for myself, since I've gotten accidentally glutened several times in recent memory...

  3. I love all gluten-free recipes that I am seeing online. And yours is one of it. Thank you for sharing this post. I hope you can also post next time about gluten-free recipes that would help avoid vitamin d3 deficiency in case there's such a thing. I would really appreciate it because it would help me find a recipe that I can cook for my mom who is the one deficient of this important vitamins.
